Score 90/100 · Drink 2014-2025, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Apr 2014

This bottle of 2004 Guiraud is not quite as good as the one served at the vertical last year. Comparing it to the likes of de Fargues, the bouquet does not possess the same clinical delineation. The palate is light and fresh on the entry but this bottle has a sour lemon note that slightly detracts from its overall focus. Still, there is fine mineralite towards the finish and it serves as a fine Sauternes for the vintage, even if I think Xavier Planty has produced superior wines in recent years. Drink now-2025. Tasted February 2014.

Tasted as part of a vertical held at the chateau. The Guiraud 2004 offers milder, more well behaved aromatics than the 2003, and there is better delineation here with lifted scents of apricot blossom, marmalade and a sense of minerality that is not apparent on previous vintages. The palate is well-balanced with a fresh, viscous opening. The acidity is nicely judged and there are plenty of dried mango, marmalade and quince notes to enjoy on the harmonious finish. This is a very assured Guiraud that has an effortless quality that previous vintages did not possess. Drink now-2025. Tasted April 2013.

Relatively simple sugary nose. Mid to light weight. OK balance but not very thrilling. Hint of burnt caramel. A bit astringent. (JR)
