The 1945 Guiraud has a powerful and more delineated bouquet than the 1955, with touches of swimming pool infusing mandarin and quince aromas. It is quite tangy with notes of Seville orange marmalade and tangerine, and what feels like more alcohol than the 1955. More spices join the chorus line towards the finish. This is an excellent Sauternes from a fabled season, but in this particular head-to-head the 1955 comes out on top. Tasted blind at the "five" dinner at Domaine de Chevalier.
