Score 91/100 · Drink 2002-2014, Robert Parker, Feb 2002
The 1999 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard comes across as French inspired. The complex, nuanced aromatics reveal scents of pepper, dried Provencal herbs, earth, and spice box. Licorice and red as well as black currants make an appearance in the mouth. It is a dead-ringer for a Rhone Valley Hermitage or top-flight Crozes-Hermitage. Consume it over the next 10-12 years. Tel. (from fruit harvested on November 18) Saturated medium ruby. High-toned, penetrating aromas of raspberry, minerals, licorice, smoke, pepper and eucalyptus. Very tightly wound and somewhat hard-edged; possesses good juicy, primary fruit but is not yet showing much flesh. Finishes quite long but youthfully tough.
