Pale yellow. Ripe but reticent nose hints at yellow stone fruits, orange zest and oak. Tactile and intensely flavored, with bracing acidity giving excellent cut to the middle palate. (Boillot described this wine's 4.2 grams per liter of acidity as "very high for the year.) This is ripe enough to drink young but has the structure to improve with bottle aging.

I especially like the precision and nuance in the 2010 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts, which comes across as cool and sophisticated in this vintage. This is a decidedly understated Referts endowed with superb purity in its floral and mineral notes. The wine turns a bit ethereal on the finish, but that does not detract from its overall balance.

Anticipated maturity: 2013. This is an impressive set of wines from Jean-Marc Boillot. The 2010s are very clearly marked by their terroirs, a departure from vintages such as 2009 and 2011, where the wines are less vivid. Boillot began harvesting on September 19th. Natural alcohols came in around 12.8%-13.2%, pretty much the same as in 2011. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. (205) 980-8802

Intense but still fragrant citrus, with delicate floral and oak notes. Very fresh and alive, leading into that rich oak spice on the palate, though the fruit and minerality are in no way overwhelmed. Finishes long. (JH)
