The NV Extra-Brut Les Beguines (base 2014) has developed well since I tasted it last year. All the energy of the year comes through in the wine's textural drive and energy. Hints of tangerine oil, truffle, white pepper and spice built through the mid-palate and into the long, pure finish. Jérôme Prévost opened this to compare it with the 2023, both vintages in which the Suzuki fly was present in the vineyards at harvest. The 2014 has aged beautifully and shows no signs of having been compromised. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: August 2016.

Denser and more compact than its 2019 counterpart, the NV Extra Brut Les Béguines LC 20 reveals inviting aromas of pear, confit citrus, mirabelle plum and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate that's vinous and sapid, built around chalky structure and concluding with a penetrating finish. While it can be approached now, a few years' patience will pay dividends.

The NV Champagne La Closerie Les Beguines Extra Brut (2019) is incredible and expressive. Entirely Meunier, it is listed as NV but is exclusively from the 2019 vintage. A layered bouquet of red flowers, currant, marzipan, and meringue is followed by elegant and fine mousse, highlighting its pure fruit of ripe red berries, a silky mineral texture, and delicate salinity. It is hard to resist now, but it will mature gracefully over the next 15-20 years.

Tasted blind in a comparison of champagne and English sparkling wine. Winemaker Jérôme Prévost. 2017 vintage base. 100% Pinot Meunier. Deep gold. Definite autolysis on the nose. Plus an edge of green apples – Épernay? Almost beery and frothy. A strange conundrum. Very sparky acidity. Needs a little bit more time … but it’s impressively long and savoury. (JR)
