100% Shiraz. Looks older and paler than the 1962. Perfumed. Sweet, with a hint of dusty violets. It’s a gorgeous drink but suffers by comparison with the smoother, sleeker 1962. Just a little chewy on the end. But long. And very concentrated. But a more typical Grange with lots of life ahead of it. (JR)

The first vintage since 1952 to be made from 100% Shiraz, this wine exhibited a fabulously complex nose of smoked meats, Asian spices, sweet, earthy scents, underbrush, licorice, charcoal, black currant, and plum. The wine is very full-bodied, very sweet, creamy-textured with opulence, a load of glycerin, and a seamlessness. Even some blackberry fruit is still present in this fabulously rich, fully mature, yet vigorous wine. It should continue to drink well for up to another decade. A great Grange! Imported by Southcorp Wines North America, Monterey, CA; tel. (408) 655-4848.

100% Shiraz. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Magill Estate (Adelaide), Morphett Vale (Adelaide), Modbury Vineyard (Adelaide) blend. Very dark indeed. Thick and sweet and medicinal, but with a little bit of port on the finish. Very sweet – livelier than the 1962.Simpler and portier than the 1962 with which it is so often compared. Furry on the finish. (JR)
