The 1999 Pavie-Macquin is similar to the 1997 in that it is fully mature, and yet it has enough depth to drink well for at least another few years. I see a bit more energy and brightness in the 1999 (relative to the 1997), that also lends a real sense of vibrancy. Sweet red cherry, dried flowers, mint, tobacco and cedar give the 1999 striking aromatic presence. The 1999 impresses with its overall balance more than anything else. I especially like the freshness here, especially with a bit of air. Ripening was pushed just until rot started to become a concern.

The 1999 Pavie-Macquin, Nicolas Thienpont’s fourth vintage, is a wine that I have not tasted since en primeur . It is quite deep in color, with thick bricking on the rim. The attractive bouquet offers red fruit, hung game and a discreet shaving of black truffle, not complex but well defined. The well-balanced palate leads off with a menthol-tinged opening. There is decent weight and grip here, though a peppermint-tinged finish obscures the terroir . That said, the wine has held up well over the last 20 years. Tasted from an ex- château bottle at the estate.

The dense plum/purple-colored 1999 offers up aromas of truffles, underbrush, espresso, black cherries, and roasted meats. The wine is powerful and muscular with high extract and mouth-searing tannin, it is an atypically backward effort for the vintage. Patient connoisseurs who admire wines with this level of intensity will be handsomely repaid for their discipline. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.
