Score 89/100 · Drink 2015-2020, Josh Raynolds, Jan 2015

The 1994 Cornas displays musky redcurrant and dried cherry qualities on the pungent, smoke- and spice-accented nose and in the mouth. Lively and a bit tightly wound, it slowly picks up floral and botanical herb flourishes with aeration. While lacking the flesh to be considered outstanding, which is typical for this rain-plagued vintage, it's still very easy to drink, with good finishing cut, gentle tannins and an echo of candied flowers lingering.

Dark ruby/purple-colored, the medium-bodied 1994 Cornas displays fine extract, and sweet, spicy, cassis-like flavors, but its short finish and lack of any serious depth are surprising. It should drink well for 5-6 years. Verset has always been one of my favorite producers in Cornas (along with Auguste Clape), so I was surprised that the 1994 and 1995 offerings did not exhibit more intensity and character. I realize that some of his best foudres of wine are being sold to several negociants, which might explain the performance of these two wines.
