Tasting notes
(this was to have been bottled in mid-November, just after my visit) Opaque dark ruby. Deeply concentrated raspberry, strawberry and cassis aromas perked up by a vibrant mineral overlay and a strong note of candied violet. Sharply focused red and dark berry fruit flavors show remarkable depth and energy and a rich, velvety texture. This round and strikingly concentrated wine shows fully absorbed tannins and a red fruit-dominated finish that won't quit. The mix of high and low notes here is utterly captivating.

The top cuvee of red Hermitage, the 2004 Hermitage Le Greal (a blend of grapes from the estate’s Greffieux and Meal vineyards) achieved 14% natural alcohol. A pure, well-textured, elegant effort with hints of Pinot Noir-like finesse and sensuality, this medium-bodied 2004 is a noteworthy success in this irregular vintage. Consume it over the next decade. Importer: JAO Wine Imports, McLean, VA.
