Tasting notes
(100% tempranillo) Saturated, glass-staining ruby. Highly expressive aromas of boysenberry, blueberry, cherry-vanilla, cola and smoky vanillin oak spice; you could scent a room with this stuff. Lush, deeply concentrated dark berry flavors convey liqueur-like richness but are shockingly lithe thanks to firm minerality, which adds back-end lift and snap. Takes on exotic Asian spice and candied anise nuances on the finish, which doesn't want to let up.

The otherworldly 2004 Finca el Picon is sourced from a 2-hectare parcel of Tempranillo vines. It spent 26 month in new French oak and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. It presents an ethereal aromatic array of toasty new oak, smoke, pencil lead, violets, cinnamon, and blackberry jam. This is followed by a full-bodied, rich, lavish wine with very intense flavors, a velvety texture, and enough stuffing to evolve for up to a decade in the cellar. It will provide pleasure through 2035. Only 400 bottles were made available to the USA market. Importer: Antalva Wine Imports, Los Angeles, CA; (310) 695-6260 www.pagodeloscapellanes.com
