Score 89/100 · Drink 1996-2006, Robert Parker, Jun 1996

The 1970 Les Ormes de Pez has been a consistently strong performer. After having drunk nearly a case (purchased for $4.99 a bottle in 1973), I must confess that not one bottle has been fully mature, and I doubt that this wine will ever reach an ideal balance between its fruit, tannin, and acidity. The most concentrated Les Ormes de Pez I have tasted, it possesses a thick, plum/garnet color with an amber tint at the edge. Thick, rich, and robust, with a peppery, iron, cedary, earthy, curranty nose, this admirable, full-throttle wine can be drunk now as well as over the next decade.

The Cazes family – owners of Lynch-Bages – added this Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois estate to their portfolio in 1940, just one year after they purchased Lynch-Bages. The property comprises 32 hectares of vines in the north of the appellation, close to the village of Pez.
