The 2002 Siran is a vintage that I had not tasted before; this vintage was made by Edouard Miailhe’s mother (she oversaw the winemaking from 1988 to 2007). This has a very light and ephemeral bouquet that clearly needs more fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and appears to have matured better than the nose with tart red fruit on the entry and fine acidity, though it does lack substance on its attenuated finish; tea leaves linger on the aftertaste. Bottles should be drunk in the near future. Tasted at the château.

Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, classement 2003 Bright crimson. Admirably scented. Very gentle. No drama but a very mellifluous whole. Surely great value for early drinking? (JR)
A perfumed style (flowers, red currants, and raspberries as well as hints of seaweed and earth) is found in this attractive, medium-bodied wine that has moderate tannin, good depth, and a solid constitution. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.
Very deep crimson. Not much nose. Quite chewy tannins. A bit like milk chocolate – not exciting, but comforting. Very jagged, pinched tannins on the finish. (JR)
About the producer
In the south of Margaux, this property has 36 hectares of vines. There’s an unusually large proportion of Petit Verdot (13%) in the vineyard, something which the team feels adds finesse, concentration and a spicy finish to the wine.
