The 2001 Siran was tasted from two bottles that had crumbly corks. It has a perfumed, well-defined, floral bouquet of black cherries, cassis, rose petal and incense aromas, with the DNA of Margaux plastered all over it. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, pliant and easygoing like the 2000, but a little earthier and edgier toward the finish, though similar in length. It just fades a bit in the glass.

Very dark crimson and heavily extracted. The fruit is dramatic but so are the tannins and there may not be quite enough in the middle to hold them together for a really successful wine. Good value though. (JR)

A stern, virile offering, Siran’s 2001 exhibits an impressive saturated ruby/purple color, but plays it close to the vest revealing notes of vitamins, black currants, smoke, and minerals. Hard in the finish, very extracted, and somewhat of a mystery, it seems big and rich, but lacks charm. There is a lot going on, and perhaps it will evolve into something far better than my score suggests. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2014.

Blackish crimson. Lowkey nose and masses of rather offputting acidity. I actually wrote 'quintessential lunchtime claret' 18 monts after the first note so at least there is consistency here. Brrrracing. (JR)
