The 2009 Volnay Champans flows across the palate with the grace of a ballerina. An exotic bouquet melds into expressive red berries, flowers, tobacco and spices. Clean, chalky notes frame the long, beautifully articulated finish. The tension and sheer energy here is fabulous.

Etienne de Montille’s 2009 reds have developed beautifully since I last tasted them about six months ago. De Montille was among the very first growers to harvest in 2009. At the outset de Montille’s 2009s were a bit awkward, but today they have come together better than I expected. Importer: Martin Scott Wines, Little Neck, NY; tel. (516) 327-0808

(two-thirds vendange entier ): Moderately saturated medium red. Superripe, slightly earthy aromas of red fruits, blackberry, rust and pepper. Sweet, fat and deep, managing good flavor definition for a wine with such pliant texture. The edgy peppery quality from the stems nicely frames the red fruits on the fresh, firmly tannic finish.

The 2009 Volnay Champans is a fresh, floral wine graced with delicate layers of red fruit. This shows good weight and depth in a medium-bodied, accessible style. The Champans was made with 67% whole clusters.
