Score 86/100 · Robert Parker, Apr 1998

Spain's most consistently great winery continues to turn out exciting wines. The 1993 Valbuena, from a difficult vintage, possesses plenty of sweet oak, a meaty, grilled herb-scented nose, moderately good concentration, and a soft, short finish. It is a good, but hardly exciting effort. Importer: A Christopher Cannan Selection, Europvin USA, Watertown, MA; tel. (617) 924-7620

Dark red-ruby. Tightly wrapped cassis and licorice aromas, plus a faint mustiness that mostly dissipated with aeration. Initially rather rigid in the mouth, with a distinctly green aspect. Grew increasingly sweet with aeration, but lacks the pliancy of a ripe year. Finishes with decent length and a note of vanillin oak.
