Tasting notes
A terrific example of Barbera is the 1997 Montruc (775 cases). Aging in new French oak gives this wine an international style initially, but with airing, sweet cherry liqueur and spicy notes emerge from this dark plum-colored offering. Voluptuously-textured for a Barbera, this fat, ripe, full-bodied 1997 demonstrates how sexy wines from this vintage can be. Loaded with fruit and explosive on the palate, it offers a hedonistic wine drinking experience. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years. Importer: Dominic Nocerino, Vinifera Imports, Ronkonkoma, NY; tel. Saturated medium red. Vinous aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant, pepper and espresso. Seductively sweet, creamy flavors of cassis, minerals and spices fill the mouth. Lovely harmonious acids contribute to the impression of seamlessness. Finishes very long, with lush, suave tannins. Superb Barbera. The strong '96, by comparison, is still dominated by its acids.
