Tasting notes
The 1997 Teroldego Rotaliano displays the vintage's spectacular potential. (Italians are calling 1997 one of the greatest vintages in the last 50 years.) Aged in old barriques, the wine possesses an amazingly saturated, thick purple color, as well as an extremely rich, intense nose of animal fur, blackberry liqueur, licorice, and a touch of violets. In the mouth, it is intense and full-bodied, with exquisite ripeness and purity. This is a mouth-filling, well-endowed wine that should evolve easily for 10-15 years. Because of the extraordinary fruit ripeness, this low acid wine is accessible and delicious. Importer: Vias Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 629-0200

Black-ruby to the rim. Extravagant aromas of raw crushed blackberry, violet, cinnamon and smoked meat. Velvety but bright in the mouth, with terrific thrust. Syrah-like flavors of crystallized berries and violet. Plenty of density. Finishes with firm but suave tannins. Impressive.
