The 1989 Talbot has fine attack on the nose: red cherries, bergamot tea and pressed rose petals developing from the glass, maybe they just miss the cohesion and sophistication of the 1986. The palate is medium-bodied with rather harsh, edgy tannin. Notes of black tea and tobacco infused the red fruit with a grainy -textured finish that shows just a touch of dryness on the aftertaste that makes me think it might be better to crack this open sooner rather than later.

Bright bricky garnet. More evidently leafy than the Langoa, and that makes it smell younger, still of blackcurrant leaves and capsicum, even lavender, though there is a light meatiness. Not as long as the Langoa but richer than I expected from the nose. There's still a slight grip in the tannins and I wonder if there always will be. The tannnis may well outlast the fruit. After an hour, more liquorice on the nose and perhaps just a little dry on the palate but not dried out. (JH)

In double magnum – very rich and New Worldy. Super snazzy and attention-grabbing. (JR)
