The 2008 Beychevelle was undeservedly relegated to the "off-vintages" during this tasting, but it is certainly not that. This has plenty of blackberry, cedar, ash and pencil lead scents on the nose. It has real Saint-Julien typicité . The palate is medium-bodied with solid tannins. The texture feels a bit gritty, but there is freshness and classicism from start to finish, with just the right amount of dryness on the finish. Very fine. Tasted at the Beychevelle vertical at the property.

Less expressive than the 2012, perhaps a little tame in terms of complexity. Chewy yet balanced, higher acid than the 2012 and 2015, leaving it a little lean. A very classic style of claret. (RH)
Showing some maturity, the 2008 Château Beychevelle offers plenty of minerality as well as mature red and black fruits, hints of chocolate, medium body, and an elegant, charming, ready-to-go vibe. Drink it over the coming decade or so.

With greater care in the vineyard and more precision in the winery, Ch. Beychevelle's star is rising. That's in large part due to the leadership of Philippe Blanc and investment by current owners, Japanese brewers Suntory and French wine group Castel.
