Sink into the tobacco and leather aromatics of a 22 year old Beychevelle, showcasing the easy finesse of the appellation even in a vintage that was not particularly celebrated at the time. The colour here is heading towards tawny, more evolved than some St Julien siblings you might find in the vintage, and I would place it as older if tasting blind, but that doesn't take away from the harmonious and moreish oyster shell and salted cracker minerality, and the soft melted tannins alongside wild strawberry and loganberry fruit. Charming, fine tannins, elegant. Harvest September 26 to October 10, 60% new oak.

The 2002 Beychevelle has a light, rather dusty/tertiary bouquet that needs more fruit. This is just a bit dull, and the 1999 appears to have more vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with a sharp, angular entry. The acidity is noticeable here, but the finish feels dry and somewhat raw. Frankly, I do not take an enormous amount of pleasure from this. Tasted at the Beychevelle vertical at the property.

Toasty, thick and sweet. Flattering with an overlay of cocoa. Much more solid than most wines so far. (JR)

About the producer

Château Beychevelle 1:1
Beychevelle

With greater care in the vineyard and more precision in the winery, Ch. Beychevelle's star is rising. That's in large part due to the leadership of Philippe Blanc and investment by current owners, Japanese brewers Suntory and French wine group Castel.
