The 1995 Beychevelle has never been one of my favorite vintages, inferior to the 2005 or 2015 that I juxtaposed at the table. Dark berry fruit, quite ferrous, is evidence of a little Brettanomyces. The palate is powerful and muscular, which is not really the Beychevelle style, and quite spicy towards the finish. Will it improve with time? I doubt it.

The 1995 Beychevelle has a rather ephemeral bouquet considering the growing season, with light brambly red fruit, iron piping and scorched earth aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. It's fairly fleshy yet without enormous depth and grip. But I appreciate the subtle spiciness/clove on the finish; it feels harmonious. Drink soon. Tasted at the Beychevelle vertical at the property.

Mid crimson with a little evolution. Lots of complex fruity development on the nose. Easy and sweet on the palate. Meat-and-two-veg notes. A little awkward on the palate – a bit jagged. (JR)

About the producer

Château Beychevelle 1:1
Beychevelle

With greater care in the vineyard and more precision in the winery, Ch. Beychevelle's star is rising. That's in large part due to the leadership of Philippe Blanc and investment by current owners, Japanese brewers Suntory and French wine group Castel.
