The 2005 Haut-Bages Averous (renamed “Echo” in 2008) is light and just average in quality. There is not a lot of density or richness to the wine, which is pleasant but one-dimensional. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
Rather a weak nose but lovely balance on the palate – very ripe but with good freshness too. Not a long-distance runner but almost drinking well already! Just slightly simple. (JR)
The second wine of Ch Lynch Bages is very attractive at this early stage – very ripe and full and extraordinarily opulent on the nose. Spicy, almost brûlée then good freshness and broad palate spread. Neat, dry tannins on the finish. Very lively and bracing – a real palate scrub. (JR)
About the producer
Ch. Lynch-Bages is one of the largest and best properties in Pauillac, in the Médoc. While officially classified as a Fifth Growth estate, it regularly competes with the First and Second Growths when it comes to quality and ageability.
