The late Gérard Potel rarely missed a beat, but the 1983 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées represents a rare failure, offering up smudged, unclean aromas and a firm, bitter palate. Given the rot that plagued this vintage, perhaps that's no surprise.

This wine is medium ruby/orange in color, and quite hard and tannic. It shows rich and great fruit, depth and richness, and a long finish, but it is coarse and tastes harsh, particularly for a wine from this estate. Will it develop more charm?
