The 1996 Clarke, which contains more Merlot than previous vintages, has an attractive nose with touches of brambly red fruit, singed leather, cedar and a dab of licorice emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It's a little conservative compared to the 1995, with a slightly austere, tobacco-tinged finish. Maybe accompanied with food this will show better, although it does lack a bit of flair. Tasted at the château.
