The 1999 Batailley comes from a period when the château was still finding its way. Now 20 years old, it has never quite lost its herbaceousness on the nose. The palate is solid and grippy, lacking the flair and elegance that is evident in recent vintages. It's the kind of Pauillac that I might take a chance on if listed for a decent price, but not particularly memorable. Tasted from a bottle in my personal cellar.

Relatively pale crimson. Gentle, quite evolved nose with an autumnal undertow. Neat. Lighter weight than most Pauillacs. Good, if slightly callow, for current drinking. Slightly dry finish. Relatively loose. (JR)

This wine is dark ruby-colored, with medium body and notes of weedy black currants intermixed with earth and saddle leather. It has moderate tannin and a firm finish. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012.

Interesting aromas of spices, berries and hints of tar. Medium-bodied, with medium tannins and a silky-textured finish. Best after 2004. 20,830 cases made. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 2002
