Score 87/100 · Drink 2013-2019, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2008

These 2004 Barolos are the finest wines I have tasted from Oddero in many a year. The wines possess a surprising level of concentration relative to past recent vintages, with little of the shrillness that characterized those wines. It's great to see Oddero making solid wines once again. The 2004 Barolo is a fairly compact, mid-weight offering with attractive dark red fruit. The wine offers good length although the tannins clamp down on the finish. Still, this is a respectable effort at this level.

The grapes come from two vineyards, in La Morra and Castiglione Falletto, and are kept separate throughout the process. Aged separately in 40hl French oak barrels (90%) and 225l barrels (10%) for 30 months. Already quite rusty at the rim. Lots of ripe fruit and then tarry development. Very correct and quite approachable already so long as some good truffles or parmesan are served… Appetising and super clean on the persistent finish. Relatively delicate. Very precise. Not expensive. £22.50 Waitrose (80 branches, and Waitrose Wine Direct)
