Drink 2015-2030, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Nov 2015

Giacomo Conterno's 1967 Barolo is remarkably deep and vivid in its color. Sadly, this bottle is slightly corked, which in some ways makes the wine's otherwise stunning personality all the more disappointing to see. I have had the 1967 many times, but I don't think I have ever come across as bottle with this much freshness and overall vitality. A few days later, Roberto Conterno told me 1967 is one of his favorite vintages of the era and that he often prefers it to some of the more famous vintages of the decade. Thinking back to this wine, it's easy to see why.

The estate's 1967 Barolo takes things to another level in terms of its intensity and sheer depth. Though a touch rustic, it is a beautiful bottle from Giacomo Conterno.

Giacomo Conterno's 1967 Barolo was awesome. It was similar to the Gaja in the depth of its fruit, but with a more balsamic profile of mint, leather, spices and tar. During this era Conterno sourced fruit from Monforte and Serralunga, and this Barolo revealed the heft that is the hallmark of those villages. Notwithstanding the wine's masculinity, the finish was sweet, long and sublime. This was an exceptional bottle.

Before we got to it we enjoyed a beautiful bottle of the 1967 Barolo, which was sweet, balsamic and beautifully layered with fruit.
