Score 93/100 · Drink 2004-2010, Daniel Thomases, Wine Advocate, Oct 2003

The 2001 Barbera d’Asti Superiore, from vineyards in Castiglione d’Asti, is, if possible, even richer and more massive than the d’Alba Gallina, similarly styled, but denser, weightier, and fuller. It is a textbook Barbera, one of the four or five finest of the region. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2010. Red-ruby. Scented aromas of black cherry, blackberry, licorice, violet and spice cake. Lush and chewy in the mouth though essentially gentle, with superb vinosity and thrust. Strong inner-mouth violet perfume. Has the strong fruit to balance the oak on the long finish.
