Tasting notes
Produced from extremely old vines, the 2000 Barbera d'Asti Superiore may be even more profound than the Gallina. Opaque purple-colored, with a sumptuous perfume of jammy black fruits, underbrush, licorice, vanilla, cigar smoke, and toast, this rich, opulent, full-bodied Barbera is loaded with concentration. Drink this explosive, hedonistic fruit bomb over the next 5-7 years. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. Medium ruby. Superripe aromas of black cherry, licorice, spice cake, dark chocolate and mocha. Fat, full, lush and sweet in the middle, then almost shockingly firm on the back, where a firm-edged cherry skin flavor contributes to the impression of structure. With its rather pronounced but harmonious acidity, this very impressive barbera is rather backward today.
