Tasting notes
Thankfully, those qualities come back in with beautiful style in the 2007 Barolo Leon. The wine shows so much definition, all its aromas come into focus with startling detail. Red berries, licorice, mint, white pepper, pressed violets and spice make for a fabulous bouquet that is nothing short of symphonic. That same etched detail is present throughout the mouthfeel. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030. Cascina Luisin makes excellent Dolcetto and Barbera, but I focused on Barbaresco and Barolo in this tasting. These wines turned out to be one of the best surprises of my time in the Langhe. Importer: Acid. Inc Selections, New York, NY; tel. (718) 777-2243

Serralunga d'Alba. Dark ruby with the beginning of orange on the rim. Very sweet and oaky, and firmly pushing the popular button. Hints of dry fruit. Much more genuine on the palate, with high acidity pulling the fruit into focus. Ripe, tannic layer on the finish. Attractive introduction to Barolo. (WS)
