Score 93/100 · Drink 2005-2012, Pierre Rovani, Jun 2003

Herbal liqueur, honeyed minerals, and chalk emanate from the glass of the superb 2001 Chevalier-Montrachet Clos des Chevaliers. It reveals great depth to its dense, velvety-personality. Liquid minerals, pears, spices, and hints of melon are found in its penetrating flavor profile as well as in its exceptionally long, delineated finish. This magnificently refined wine is juicy, pure, and concentrated. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2012. Importers: Eric Solomon, European Cellars, New York, NY; tel. Of course it would be sacrilege to drink an exciting grand cru white burgundy as young as four years old, but I bet lots of people will do it, and this is one of the more suitable candidates. From another Chartron monopole, this exciting wine is smokily perfumed already and really full, opulent yet lively on the palate with a thrilling seam of minerality running through it. So much the best of these! (JR)
