The 2000 is another wow wine. Sensual and elegant through and through, the 2000 emerges from the glass with tons of ripe dark fruit, crushed flowers, raspberries, earthiness, worn-in leather and licorice. It possesses marvelous depth and intensity in its fruit, but with a level of complexity and nuance in the bouquet that completes the wine in magnificent style. The round, enveloping finish makes it impossible to resist a second taste.

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Alicante The winter of 2000 gave the Maremma higher than normal temperatures and even the springtime was sunny. The summer and the harvest period were also favoured by the sun and high temperature: therefore, excellent conditions that give the grapes a homogeneous if a little early maturity. The harvest was carried out between 4 and 30 September. 20,000 bottles produced Fattoria Le Pupille moves: the new – and current – headquarters were inaugurated. Bright crimson. Very dark. Some of that dusty quality again (see 1990 and 1993). Even a hint of beef extract. Very plush and velvety texture – just slightly overripe fruit flavours. This has a hint of 2003 character about it. The tannins are a bit dry, there’s a lack of flesh and I’d drink sooner rather than later. Flattering rather than fine. (JR)
