Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The 2011 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos from Laroche feels rather simple on the nose compared to its peers with straightforward lemon peel and cold stone scents. It feels conservative and restrained. The palate is clean and fresh, almost economical with good balance and then a real crystalline finish that is understated and extremely well poised. Vrai les clos.

The 2011 Chablis Les Clos is striking. Freshly cut flowers, slate, lemon oil and mint all jump from the glass in a weightless, dazzling Chablis that captures a level of finesse that is exceedingly rare in 2011. A gracious, impeccably balanced wine, the 2011 Clos impresses for its harmony and sense of proportion. This is a terrific showing from Laroche. The Clos was aged in 55 hectoliter foudres rather than the smaller barrels used elsewhere.

(entirely from old vines): Good pale yellow. Deep yet vibrant aromas of white peach, crushed stone and ginger. Conveys a creamy old-vines quality but this wine's powerful calcaire energy is keeping the middle palate a bit youthfully stunted today. Finishes very rich, salty and long, with subtle notes of freshly cut hay and licorice. Great potential here.

More interesting than the other Laroches – has more depth and breadth. The acid seems particularly vibrant too. Tangy, almost piquant. (RH)
