Tasting notes
The 2000 La Ricolma comes across as dull and lacking in depth. Soft and floral, the 2000 shows only modest complexity. "In 2000, from Sangiovese to Merlot, we didn't make a single wine that is truly satisfying," said Luca Martini di Cigala. That's a bit severe in my view, but there is no getting past the fact that the 2000 is a touch lean and not really interesting. If there were any doubts about that, they were dispelled in this tasting.

The leading wine of the vintage here was obviously the 2000 La Ricolma, 100% Merlot, with much plum fruit and alcoholic warmth on the nose, chocolate and raisin flavors, and the classic supple tannins of the variety. A bit of heat on the finish, however, recalls the searing temperatures of late August and September. Drink: 2005-2015. Importer: Winebow, Hohokus, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620
