Score 93/100 · Drink 2013-2021, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2012

The 2001 Barolo Ciabot Manzoni has aged gracefully. Dark red fruit, smoke, licorice, spices and tar emerge from this muscular, firm Barolo. The 100% new French oak barrels mark the wine to a considerable degree, but that hasn't kept the wine from developing beautifully over the years. This is a great showing for the Ciabot Manzoni.

The 2001 Barolo Bricco Manzoni has aged gracefully. Dark red fruit, smoke, licorice, spices and tar emerge from this muscular, firm Barolo. The 100% new French oak barrels mark the wine to a considerable degree, but that hasn’t kept the wine from developing beautifully over the years. This is a great showing for the Bricco Manzoni. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021. Grasso is one of the most overlooked producers in Piedmont. The Baroli are delicious upon release and also age beautifully, even in lesser years. Grasso's 2001 Barolo Bricco Luciani reveals a medium ruby color along with an intensely spiced nose and plenty dark red fruit and menthol flavors, closing with good length. It is the most approachable of these 2001s.

Good deep red-ruby. Musky espresso, menthol and dried flowers on the nose; more classically Barolo and less Burgundian. At once broad and juicy, with concentrated dark berry and menthol flavors conveying intensity without any undue weight. Lovely rising finish features big, chewy tannins.
