The 1992 Cos d'Estournel is an off-vintage that I have only tasted once before when it did not impress. After 26-years it has a healthy dark colour with modest ageing on the rim. The bouquet is surprisingly better than I anticipated with dark berries, sous-bois , touches of peat and a light ferrous tincture. For the first 10 minutes the wine hold up reasonably well, however, I notice some decay and the finish becomes hard, one-dimensional and rather metallic. This was a last-minute addition, a half-bottle bought in Bordeaux but coming from an original, perfectly-stored case. Are bottles better? I somehow doubt it. Drink up. Tasted at Glasshouse restaurant in London.

One of the stars of the vintage, the 1992 Cos d'Estournel exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, medium to full body, scents of smoky oak, and copious amounts of blackcurrant fruit. Velvety-textured and medium to full-bodied, this is an atypically ripe, concentrated, impressively-endowed wine that should drink well for 6-10 years. It is a 1992 that merits considerable interest!

About the producer
Louis Gaspard d’Estournel inherited Cos and Pomys in 1791, founding Cos d’Estournel in 1811, investing significantly in the property and expanding the estate from 14 to 45 hectares. The estate rapidly rose to prominence and the wines were exported around the world.
