The 1959 Cos d’Estournel is a rarely seen vintage that I have only tasted once before. There are but a handful of bottles remaining at the property. It has an ethereal bouquet that is not a million miles away from the 1961. Maybe after all this time it does not quite deliver the precision of that vintage, however it bestows bewitching scents of kirsch, mint, fig and broom, actually gaining intensity as it opens in the glass. The palate is beautifully balanced, fully mature and perhaps, if one must quibble, just a few years past its best. Yet, you cannot deny the wonderful balance. It is quite masculine for a 1959 having lost some of its fleshiness, but I conjecture that this was awesome 20 years ago. Now it is an exquisite antique. (NM)

About the producer
Louis Gaspard d’Estournel inherited Cos and Pomys in 1791, founding Cos d’Estournel in 1811, investing significantly in the property and expanding the estate from 14 to 45 hectares. The estate rapidly rose to prominence and the wines were exported around the world.
