This was one of only six remaining bottles of the debut vintage for L’Apparita, held at the estate. What an honour to try, thankfully, a perfect bottle. It was bright, fleshy, almost Burgundian with a nose of sousbois, forest floor, decayed red and dark plum fruit. There is still some structure and tannic backbone evident, holding up well, but it’s the fragrant perfume that impresses. A special wine and a wonderfully fitting end to an extraordinary vertical of L’Apparita. Romantic, historic and memorable.

A gorgeous wine, the 1985 L'Apparita is pure silk on the palate. Subtle and graceful, the 1985 impresses for many things, including its balance. Just as important, though, this first vintage of L'Apparita is still beautiful and finessed. Tasted within the context of the vintages that followed, the 1985 comes across as mature and not particularly complex, but it has nevertheless held up well over the last nearly thirty years. That is more than enough in my book for one of Italy's most groundbreaking wines.

Castello di Ama is one of the pre-eminent estates in Chianti Classico. Situated in the southern-most district of the appellation, the estate has only been making wine since the late 1970s but has since built a reputation as one of the region’s best.
