Wynns had a run of good vintages in the 1990s, and this is still showing sculpted blue fruits, if less muscular than the 1990. Cassis, loganberry, blueberry, smoky notes, powered by an intense tannic frame and bright acidity that is just a little marked (they would be adjusting acidities perhaps a little heavily at the time). Peter Douglas winemaker, and this is at a great moment to drink.

Surprisingly still alive and offering lots of pleasure. Smoke, fig, spice and great texture. Liquorice root, plum, gun smoke and rich iron-tinged fruit. Lots of mouthfeel and the tannins are still very much present and integrated, supporting the wine throughout. (AC)

Deep in colour, this 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon John Riddoch is a broad and powerful expression of Coonawarra offering both impressive fruit drive and complexity. Blackberry, gravel, cedary and violet scented fruits provide a generous and giving introduction. There is then quite a classic Cabernet feel to dark, chocolatey fruits on strong foundations of crisp acidity and firm tannins. Beautiful balance and flow as it evolves through to more cedary and cigarbox flavours on the finish of impressive length. On point and likely to hold for at least a decade.

Very good, at a lovely stage of life – leaves, bracken, liquorice, chocolate and menthol plus a good black fruit element too. Great length. (RH)
