Score 90/100 · Drink 2025, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous, Dec 2025

After 20 years, the 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is drinking at peak, unwinding with very ripe and concentrated red fruits, tobacco and a touch of mushrooms. Clearly made from very ripe grapes, the 2005 is concentrated and exuberant, yet still holds together remarkably well. A blockbuster red Châteauneuf for the hedonists. Nicolas Boiron reported that 2005 was the first vintage when he started to work with the late consultant Philippe Cambie.

A ripe, evolved and fully mature bottle, the 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape (75% Grenache, 12% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and the rest Cinsault, Vaccarese and Counoise) offers lots of garrigue, fig, cured meats and hints of toasted nuts to go with a medium-bodied, classically styled feel on the palate. It’s best consumed over the coming couple of years.

Dark red. Pure raspberry and strawberry on the nose, with a gentle floral element. Suave, silky flavors of fresh red fruits and floral pastilles. A poised, refreshing classique, displaying impressive balance and finishing sweetness.

75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 12% Mourvèdre, 3% Cinsault, Vaccarèse, Counoise. From lieux-dits: Esquirons, Trois Coups, Boursan, Barbe d'Asne, Mont Redon, Gardioles, Pignan, Montpertuis, Grandes Serres, Terres Blanches, Bosquet, Chemins Vieux, Galiguières, Brusquières. 30% destemmed. 12-18 months, 20% in concrete, 20% demi muids, 60% foudres. 40,000 bottles produced. Healthy blackish ruby. Attractively energetic top note on quite a complex bouquet. Something a little animal and lots of juiciness. Quite loose tannins. Some freshness. Still a way to go, but no great density or concentration. (JR)
