Score 89/100 · Drink 2014-2018, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Feb 2014

The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape traditional cuvee is a blend of 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and the balance a mix of other permitted varieties. Aged in a combination of concrete tanks, foudre and demi-muids, it is a classic, textbook effort that exudes garrigue, saddle leather, earth, underbrush and copious sweet red and black fruits. Medium-bodied, elegant and mature, it should be consumed over the coming handful of years. The first vintage where winemaker Nicolas Boiron was completely in charge, 2004 is a solid year for this estate and the wines show classic profiles across the board. In addition, this was the first vintage where they started to implement partial destemming.

Deep red. Fresh red berries and cherry on the nose, along with a hint of chocolate. Supple, easygoing and sweet, with fresh red fruit flavors, gentle tannins and a persistent mocha note on the finish. This drinks nicely right now.

Good fragrance and balance on the nose but a bit dull and slightly stewed on the palate. Hint of rhubarb. Where’s the lift and freshness? (JR)

Dark red color. Ripe red berries and plum on the direct if somewhat simple nose. Round, sweet and sappy on the palate, with candied red berry, cherry and cocoa flavors in a soft, round package. Direct, honest wine, finishing with gentle tannins and lingering sweet red fruit.
