Rich ruby – looks quite developed, with a spicy nose that's full of tar and pleasure and fruit – and lots of alcohol apparent on the finish. Low acid. Sup up! (JR)
Medium red. Red fruit and tobacco aromas. Moderately dense and ripe, with a restrained sweetness. Today the tannins come across as distinctly dusty, giving the wine an austere character.
A blend of 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Malbec, the nearly outstanding 2003 Puygueraud may be the finest wine this estate has ever produced. A late harvest ensured a deep ruby/purple-tinged wine with terrific ripeness, loads of black fruits, underbrush, incense, and Asian spices. This full, powerful effort should age for a minimum of 10 years.
About the producer
The Thienpont family bought Ch. Puygueraud in 1946, running it as a farm until the 1980s when Nicolas Thienpont moved the focus to viticulture, with the first vintage in 1983. Based in the Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, the property comprises 47 hectares of vines, both red and white.
