The 2009 Bastor-Lamontagne has an odd bouquet, slightly Germanic in style with a hint of petrol infusing the honeyed fruit. The palate is well balanced with a slightly bitter entry, viscous in texture with a wild honey and frangipane finish. A bit of heat on the finish. The second bottle shows sign of fatigue, this is a vexing showing from a wine that showed so well just after bottling. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

Pale to medium gold colored, the 2009 Bastor-Lamontagne features notions of hay, toasted almonds, Manuka honey, stewed tea and tree bark. Full-bodied, concentrated and showing a fair bit of maturity, it has a savory palate and finishes on a lingering earthy note.
Tasted blind. First bottle: stinky nose and a bit awkward. Second bottle: still stinky, as though it had some sort of bacterial problem? Hot end. (JR)
Full, rich body and plenty of crème brulée with caramelized mandarin and orange character, the sweetness now very well integrated. The mature character adds interest to the fairly long finish. Drink now.
About the producer
This Sauternes estate was acquired by the Cathiard family of Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte in 2014. Located not too far from Ch. Suduiraut, the property has 52 hectares of vines in a single block.
