Bright red. Complex, soil-driven aromas of plum, redcurrant, tobacco, iron and smoke. Silky, supple and fine-grained; much less expressive in the mouth than the Taillepieds and yet it offers an unusually pliant texture for young Rugiens. Notes of violet and spice provide lift. This very reticent wine will have much more to say with five years of cellaring. I'm not convinced that the 2008 version will match this.

(100% vendange entier Good deep red. Knockout nose combines musky red berries, iron, spices and minerals, with hints of superripeness countered by strong notes of red soil. Almost surprisingly sweet in the mouth, with pungent minerality framing and intensifying the flavor and giving them a sappy urgency. Finishes impressively long, vibrant and complex. Today this, the Taillepieds and the Mitans seem every bit as good as the corresponding 2005s. (The Pezerolles was impossible to rate in its reduced form following a very late malolactic fermentation that only ended in September.)
Sweet and rich and very slightly soupier than the Taille Pieds. Big and round and easy – though perhaps it could do with a little more freshness. (JR)
About the producer
Volnay’s Domaine de Montille is one of the most historic in the Côte d’Or. Founded in 1730, the property remains family-owned and run, with Etienne de Montille – the ninth generation – at the helm today.
