The 2003 Blanc de Blancs was bottled in spring 2004 and disgorged in August 2013. Like the 2001, this did not go through malo, as was the practice at the time. It has a similar nose to the 2001, very citric and maybe a little one-dimensional compared to earlier vintages. The palate is better balanced than the 2001, showing more harmony and tension, and the warmer vintage manages to counter the lack of malo in the winery (the low crop load also meant that there was more concentration). Bruised apple and just a hint of cherry linger on the finish.

Impressively developed. Loads of crunchy green apple fruit – really brilliant. Benefits from the extra heat of the year, no doubt. At least as good as anything else at this price. (RH)

This wine really stood out in the flight – smoky and almost nutty – pistachio. Very striking, distinctive, with a chord of honey and sharp white peach. Real bite of acidity and then quite vegetal and green on the mid palate. Almost oily. Definitely the most interesting of the flight but also loose on the finish – is this beginning to fall apart? Sophisticated autolytic nose, dry and bready with maturity showing really nicely. Sour apples and spice to finish. (RH)
