The 2011 La Mondotte could be mistaken for a Rioja on the nose, not a bad Rioja, but that is not exactly what I seek in my Claret. The palate is fleshy, rounded, a little soft in the mouth. Vestiges of red fruit intermingled with black pepper and clove lead to a cohesive finish that is enjoyable, even if it is not complex. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind. Glowing crimson. Mild and well balanced with nothing dominating but an attractive whole. Rather Figeac-like! (JR)

The 2011 La Mondotte has a very pure, defined bouquet that offers luscious dark cherries and blackberry scents, hints of violet petal emerging with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth entry, very well-judged acidity and a seamless finish that slips down the throat with style. This is simply a gorgeous and voluptuous Saint Emilion that will seduce at twenty paces, which is something you could not ascribe to many 2011s. Tasted April 2015.

Lots of sweet oak spice and vanilla on the nose. Red fruit too. Very red fruited and a little confected on the palate, the tannins are fine and dry but the acidity and the fruit don't seem fully meshed in. Slightly tart on the finish. (JH)
