From a single vineyard in the north-western portion of Barossa, the 2004 Kalleske Shiraz Greenock is a seriously dense, rich wine that despite all the fruit, maintains a classic feel. Black to the rim, the wine is still quite youthful and primary, showing ripe blackberry and crème de cassis, smoked meats, baker’s chocolate, and loads of sweet spice on the nose. Slightly more evolved and supple on the palate however, it’s full bodied with a soft, round and integrated feel, beautifully pure fruit, and a long finish that pumps out loads of fruit. While I don’t think this will be incredibly long lived, I do think the aromatics will be better in 1-3 years, and given the overall balance on the palate, it should evolve gracefully for another 5-8 years or so.

Produced from relatively young vines some of whose fruit is sold to Seppelt and Penfolds, the 2004 Greenock Shiraz possesses an opaque purple color in addition to a gorgeously rich nose of toasty, smoky oak interwoven with black raspberry, blackberry, and cassis fruit flavors. Full-bodied, rich, and spicy, with no hard edges, it displays a generous dosage of American oak that is nearly over the top. Importer: Dan Philips, The Grateful Palate, Oxnard, CA; tel. Inky violet. Gorgeous bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry and candied cherry, with subtle notes of mocha and spicecake. Lush, plump and fresh, the ripe berry flavors showing excellent purity and a tangy candied licorice note. Finishes with silky tannins and excellent length. This gained weight in the glass but never lost focus, and benefits from a compelling fruit/tannin balance.
