Pira's 2005 Barolo Marenca is superb. A big, dramatic wine, the 2005 has aged impeccably. The Marenca is ample and broad, with a huge core of fruit to match its textured, voluptuous personality. Even with all of its intensity, the Marenca has a translucence to it. The 2005 should drink well for another decade. This is a terrific showing from Giampaolo Pira.

(aged in used 500- and 700-liter tonneaux Good deep red. Highly perfumed nose offers licorice, cedar, toffee, truffle, animal fur and leather. All spine in the mouth today, conveying its underlying power but with its sweetness currently suppressed. Best today on the back end, which features major tannic clout but also excellent length and lift. This backward wine will also require extended cellaring.

The 2005 Barolo Vigna Marenca is another powerful wine but it seems to have enough stuffing to stand up to the structural components. The Vigna Marenca blossoms on the palate with terrific energy and vibrancy in its tar, dark red cherries, flowers and licorice, showing superb length and overall harmony.

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025. Giampaolo Pira produces some of the most extroverted wines in Barolo. In 2005 his wines reveal a lovely purity to their fruit but because of their relatively modest structures, the wines seem to be dominated by an excessive amount of French oak.
