Score 90/100 · Drink 2013-2021, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2012

Conterno's 2001 Barolo Ginestra is big, dark and powerful, especially on the palate. The aromatics aren't quite as clean or well defined as they could be, but there is no denying the 2001 has held up quite well over the last decade. Bright red berries, flowers and spices take shape in the glass as the wine turns increasingly delicate on the finish. Overall, this is a strong showing from proprietor Giorgio Conterno.

Conterno's richly-colored 2001 Barolo Ginestra shows the more authoritative side of the Ginestra cru in its complex, tightly coiled layers of dark, intensely aromatic flavors which gradually come to life in a stunning display that combines power and finesse. It will require a few years of further bottle age and should still be glorious at age 20.
