Tasting notes
Enticing cedar, cigar and grilled campfire aromatics, touch of fennel and roasted cumin seeds. Supple, charming wine in its drinking window, with a whisper of white truffle and dried cranberry. This for me is very typical of the 2000 vintage, where it is very nearly a great wine, but just lacks a little depth through the mid palate. 60% new oak for ageing.

A competent effort in a so-so vintage for dry whites from Pessac-Leognan, Smith Haut Lafitte's 2000 exhibits notions of lemon zest, grapefruit, and minerals in its medium-bodied, earthy personality. Drink it over the next 5-8 years.

About the producer

Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte is one of the leading lights of Pessac-Léognan today – all thanks to Daniel and Florence Cathiard, who took over the property in 1990 and have since transformed the estate, converting to biodynamics and crafting wines of increasing finesse.
